A beautiful new state-of-the-art visitor center was dedicated at Caballo Lake State Park on December 11, 2021.
Dignitaries from New Mexico State Parks, Bureau of Reclamation and NM Energy Minerals and Natural Resources Department addressed all who gathered for the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. Following the presentation of a plaque, guests were invited to tour the visitor center and enjoy cake and other refreshments.
The building, which will be approximately 90% powered with nearby solar panels, houses exhibits, an information desk and staff offices. An electric vehicle charging station is available in the parking lot outside the new building.
The park opened in 1964. The reservoir and dam were built between 1936 and 1938 by the Bureau of Reclamation, as part of The New Deal.
Today Caballo Lake State Park offers 170 developed campsites at four different camping areas. Recreational activities include boating, fishing, swimming, riding on the equestrian trails, birding, and exploring the park’s cactus gardens and interpretive walking trails.
