The Hermosa Field Station is located in the Gila Wilderness, 22 miles south of Winston. It includes the 54-acre historic mining town of Hermosa, the Hermosa Cemetery, and the 40-acre Kelsey Property, a historic homestead accessible via hiking trails.
The nonprofit organization Natural Curiosity purchased the property in 2023, and spent 3 years making major improvements to the town’s two original mining-era buildings and other newer replicas. Indoor and outdoor classrooms are available, and an equine facility features 6 large horse stalls.
A community kitchen is available to visitors, who may also make use of an indoor dining room or the dining area on the porch, which includes incredible views.
Natural Curiosity hosts workshops and retreats at the site, welcoming groups including researchers, trail crews, field trippers, nature enthusiasts, and wellness seekers.
In 2024, with the help of the New Mexico Land Conservancy, Natural Curiosity placed a conservation easement on these properties to protect the land in perpetuity.
