A Celestial Evening: Kayaking & Native Storytelling

caballo lake state park entrance

Join Southwest Expeditions for night kayaking on Caballo Lake followed by a Native American night sky interpretation.

Guests will be fitted with life jackets, kayaks, and paddles, and glow sticks. The group will then paddle out with guides for about an hour, staying along the shoreline, before returning to base camp for the night sky program.

Back on shore, guests can unwind at the beach fire pit with Vino & Cibo (wine & hors d’oeuvres) including:

  • Grilled shrimp skewers (marinated shrimp, lemon, parmesan-sage sauce)
  • Caprese skewers (heirloom tomato, mozzarella, fresh basil, balsamic reduction)
  • Veggie skewers (marinated veggies, halloumi, parmesan-sage sauce)

Guests will then settle into camp chairs and watch the embers glow beneath the stars as a Navajo interpretive guide shares stories of Archeoastronomy — the night sky as seen through the eyes of the ancient Native peoples.

During booking, guests select their boat type:

  • Single kayak
  • Tandem (2-person) kayak
  • 2-person canoe

All boats are hard-shell (no inflatables).

Per-person pricing is already built into each boat option, and once a boat type is fully booked, it’s no longer available.

Bringing Your Own Boat

Up to 12 additional guests may bring their own boats. No inflatables!

Along with a boat, these guests will provide their own transportation, paddles, and life jackets (required). Navigation glow sticks will be provided.

Guests bringing their own boat are responsible for loading and unloading their own watercraft, but otherwise must follow all Southwest Expeditions guide instructions and stay with the paddle group throughout the event.

To book with a personal boat, select “Customer Boat/Own Boat” when purchasing tickets.
