Sierra County has some charming restaurants that are off the beaten path. Enjoy a scenic drive to these country dining spots.

Arrey Cafe

The little town of Arrey (pronounced Array) is about 20 miles south of Truth or Consequences. From TorC / Elephant Butte, you can take Interstate 25 to exit 59, and proceed about 3 miles west on route 187, or you can take route 187 all the way from Williamsburg to Arrey. The Arrey Cafe offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, featuring Mexican and American entrees.

Breakfast features egg dishes, including steak, pork chops or chicken fried steak and eggs, biscuits and gravy, breakfast burritos, enchiladas, and sandwiches. Lunch features burgers, sandwiches, burritos, chicken strips, chili, and salads. Dinner entrees include fried chicken, steaks, pork chops, and Mexican plates. A kids menu is available. They’ll offer you a free piece of cake for dessert! Hours are 8am-8pm Monday through Saturday and 8am-4pm Sunday. Reservations are not required, but are available at 575-267-4436.

Hillsboro General Store and Cafe

The historic mining and ranching town of Hillsboro is located in the foothills of the Black Range Mountains (at the eastern edge of the Gila Wilderness), about 30 miles south and west of Truth or Consequences. Take exit 63 from Interstate 25. Turn right on route 152, and enjoy the 17 mile winding, scenic drive to Hillsboro. The Hillsboro General Store and Cafe is set in an historic adobe building that has been in continuous operation for over 130 years.

It has served as a general mercantile, drug store, stage coast stop, post office, telephone company and soda fountain. It’s a gathering place for both locals and tourists, filled with historic artifacts. The cafe offers breakfast, lunch and ice cream treats. The breakfast menu includes eggs, omelettes, breakfast sandwiches, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, French toast and pancakes. Lunch features American and Mexican entrees, including burgers, salads, sandwiches, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, and chile con carne. There are sometimes specials in addition to the regular menu.
